Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons 2026: New Sorcerer Mickey Revealed
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons for 2026 have a new Disney star: Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey. The hand-painted balloon will debut on Thursday, November 26, during the historic 100th march of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Disney unveiled it for the first time on August 13.
And after seeing the first photos, we think they picked the perfect Mickey for such a big anniversary.
What Does the New Sorcerer Mickey Balloon Look Like for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?
Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey appears in his famous look from Disney’s Fantasia, wearing his red robe, white gloves and oversized blue sorcerer hat.
What immediately stands out is the pose. Instead of an upright Mickey, he is stretched out with his arms extended, as if he is flying through the sky. It should make for quite a sight once he is floating above the streets of Manhattan.
The balloon is hand-painted and was fully inflated in public for the first time at Downtown Disney District in California on August 13. Disney revealed it there ahead of D23 Day at Disneyland Resort.
You can see more photographs and behind-the-scenes details in Disney’s official Sorcerer Mickey announcement.
Why Did Disney Choose Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey as one of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons?
Disney did not choose this version of Mickey by accident.
Joseph Titizian from Disney Consumer Products explained that Mickey was the natural character to represent Disney at the 100th parade. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice was then chosen as one of Mickey’s most recognizable roles, representing the joy, imagination, optimism and wonder Disney wanted to bring to the anniversary.
There is also a much deeper Macy’s connection behind the choice.
Mickey’s Macy’s Parade History Goes Back to 1934
Mickey Mouse first became a Macy’s Parade balloon in 1934, just ten years after the first parade.
That original Mickey was around 40 feet tall and held 2,664 cubic feet of helium. It was constructed by the Goodyear Rubber Company, while handlers dressed as Mickey and Minnie helped guide it through New York.
Mickey has returned in several forms since then. He appeared alongside Donald Duck in 1972, Bandleader Mickey welcomed the new millennium in 2000, and Sailor Mickey debuted in 2009.
So Sorcerer Mickey is more than another new balloon. He becomes the latest chapter in a Macy’s and Disney tradition stretching back more than 90 years.
