Rockefeller Tree Lighting & Christmas in NYC: Beat the Crowds

While Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue and Midtown Manhattan can become packed with visitors during the Christmas season, the early morning offers a completely different experience. The streets are quieter, the decorations are still illuminated, and some of New York’s most famous Christmas locations can be enjoyed in an atmosphere that is almost impossible to find later in the day.

The tour begins in Times Square at 4:30 AM, where you’ll meet Marco or your guide and board a comfortable vehicle for a scenic drive through Midtown Manhattan. From Times Square, we travel along Sixth Avenue, through the Central Park South area, around The Plaza Hotel and south along Fifth Avenue toward Rockefeller Center.

At approximately 4:50 AM, we arrive near Rockefeller Center and step out of the vehicle to approach the Christmas Tree. Depending on security barriers, access restrictions and conditions that morning, the group will position itself as close to the tree as reasonably possible while maintaining a clear view.

Then comes the signature moment of the experience.

At 5:00 AM, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lights switch on for the day.

Have your phone or camera ready as one of the most famous Christmas trees in the world suddenly illuminates in the heart of Manhattan. Instead of experiencing this iconic location surrounded by the enormous daytime and evening crowds, you’ll be there during one of the quietest moments of the Christmas season.

This experience is not the official annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and does not include performances, celebrities, VIP programming or special entertainment. You are experiencing the moment the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lights turn on for the day during the quiet early-morning hours.

And once the tree illuminates, there is no need to rush away.

You’ll have approximately 20 to 25 minutes around Rockefeller Center, giving you time to enjoy the illuminated tree from different viewpoints, take photos and videos, and capture the kind of Christmas memories that become much more difficult once the crowds arrive.

The first vehicle will be personally led by Marco, who will also be happy to help take photos of you, your family, friends or group along the way. Early Access subscribers will have the first opportunity to book this departure. If the first vehicle sells out, additional vehicles may be added and led by one of our experienced NYC-licensed tour guides, following the same carefully designed experience.

After Rockefeller Center, return to the vehicle and continue toward the Columbus Circle area for a short New York coffee and breakfast stop. Warm up with a coffee and, if you are hungry, pick up a bagel, pastry or another breakfast option before continuing the tour. Food and drinks at this stop are purchased directly by guests and are not included.

At approximately 5:50 AM, we continue through Midtown Manhattan for the next part of the experience: discovering some of New York City’s most beautiful Christmas sights before the city fully wakes up.

Rather than simply driving past the decorations, we make carefully selected stops whenever conditions allow, giving you the opportunity to step out of the vehicle, see the displays up close, and take photos and videos without the normal daytime crowds.

Potential locations may include Fifth Avenue, Cartier, Saks Fifth Avenue, Louis Vuitton, Dior, The Peninsula Hotel, The Plaza Hotel, Lotte New York Palace, Radio City Music Hall, the giant Christmas ornaments, giant candy canes, the Fox Square Christmas Tree and other important seasonal displays throughout Midtown Manhattan.

The exact locations visited may vary throughout the Christmas season. Decorations change, access conditions vary, and traffic, security restrictions or special events can occasionally affect individual stops. Rather than following a rigid checklist, the route is designed to adapt so that we can showcase the best Christmas sights available that morning.

Traveling by comfortable vehicle allows us to move efficiently between different parts of Midtown while still stepping out at the most important locations. It means you can experience significantly more Christmas sights within a short period of time than would normally be possible on foot, while also staying warm and comfortable between stops.

At approximately 6:30 AM, the sightseeing experience concludes at a specially selected breakfast location in Midtown Manhattan. The exact finale for the 2026 season is currently being finalized, with the goal of ending somewhere guests can sit down, relax and continue their Christmas morning with breakfast after experiencing Rockefeller Center and Midtown before the crowds. Breakfast takes place after the official two-hour sightseeing experience unless otherwise stated in the final booking details.

This is not simply an early-morning drive through Manhattan. The entire experience has been created around timing, access, photography and atmosphere, giving you the opportunity to watch the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree illuminate at 5 AM, enjoy it while the plaza is still quiet, stop for a classic New York coffee, and discover some of Midtown’s most spectacular Christmas displays before most visitors have even started their day.
