Our Advice on the Best Time to Skate

We always recommend a weekday morning when possible.

Tuesday to Thursday mornings are usually our first choice. Rockefeller Plaza is easier to navigate, the rink feels calmer and ticket prices are often lower.

Morning skating also works well with a full Midtown itinerary. Afterwards, you can continue towards Fifth Avenue, Radio City Music Hall, Bryant Park or Central Park.

Evening sessions are beautiful once the Christmas Tree is lit. The atmosphere feels livelier, but the Plaza will be much busier.

Late evening can offer a good compromise outside weekends and school holidays. You still get the lights, but many daytime visitors have already left the area.

Which Part of the Season Should You Choose?

October suits visitors who care most about lower prices and lighter crowds. The Christmas Tree will not yet be in place, so the setting feels more like autumn than Christmas.

From November 7, you can see the tree above the rink while preparations continue. This can be a lovely compromise before the busiest December period.

Morning is usually easiest for photographs around Rockefeller Plaza.

You have fewer people competing for the same views. It is also easier to stop near the rink without blocking busy walkways.

For pictures with the illuminated tree, choose an early suitable session after December 2. Check the daily tree lighting hours before booking a very early time.

Take your main photographs from the edge of the rink or from the Plaza. It is easier and safer than trying to use your phone while skating.

The Channel Gardens also provide one of the best approaches for photographs. Walk in from Fifth Avenue for the classic view towards the tree and rink.

What to Wear and Bring

Wear warm layers that still allow you to move comfortably.

A long-sleeved base layer, sweater and wind-resistant jacket work well on most cold days. Add gloves and a hat during December, January and February.

Avoid dressing too heavily. Skating warms you up quickly, and a bulky coat can become uncomfortable once you start moving.

Getting to The Rink at Rockefeller Center

The Rink is located at Rockefeller Center between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Midtown Manhattan.

The official entrance is on 49th Street at the lower Rink Level.

The closest subway station is 47–50 Sts Rockefeller Center. The B, D, F and M trains normally stop there.

You can also take the N, R or W train to 49th Street. From there, it is a short walk to Rockefeller Plaza.

For the best first view, approach from Fifth Avenue through the Channel Gardens. You will see the Plaza and rink below as you walk towards the Christmas Tree.

We do not recommend driving during the Christmas season. Midtown traffic becomes heavy, while nearby parking is limited and expensive.

The best option depends on whether you care most about atmosphere, price or space.

Rockefeller Center for the Christmas Setting

Bryant Park for Value and Convenience

Bryant Park is normally the strongest choice for visitors watching their budget.

Admission is free when you bring your own skates, although reservations, rentals and extras can still cost money.
