Get Ready for the Most Wonderful Time of the Year in the City That Never Sleeps
Christmas in New York 2026 means tree lightings, festive events, and that unmistakable holiday magic. Did you know that New York City hosts more than 80 Christmas tree lighting ceremonies each season? In this guide, we’ll cover the most important ones, complete with dates, times, and tips, and answer one of the most common questions: when does New York decorate for Christmas in 2026?
Here’s one thing you should know. All tree lighting ceremonies and holiday light shows in New York City are completely free. If someone tries to sell you a ticket, do not buy it. Unfortunately, ticket scams around free Christmas events are common. It’s one of several frauds to watch out for when visiting New York during the holidays.

The Official Start of Christmas Decorations in NYC
Have you ever tried asking for the official start date of Christmas in New York? You’ll hear many different answers. Some say the city is fully decorated by early December. Others believe the Christmas spirit arrives just after Thanksgiving. In this guide, we give you the real answer to the question: when does New York decorate for Christmas in 2026?
From experience, we know that the first lights and decorations start appearing in early October. The Rockefeller Center Ice Skating Rink opens on October 10, 2026, well before the tree or any Fifth Avenue decorations arrive. The Bryant Park Winter Village, with its Christmas Market and free-admission ice rink, opens on October 23. Just two days later, on October 25, Wollman Rink in Central Park also opens for the season. That means several of New York’s Christmas activities begin before the Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village, which takes place on October 31.
On October 26, the Rockefeller Christmas Tree is officially announced. This is the moment the countdown to the season truly begins, even though the tree itself won’t arrive in the city until November 7.
From late October through mid-November, you’ll see more lights, trees, and decorations pop up across the city. Still, the true holiday feeling officially begins with Thanksgiving. On November 26, 2026, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks off the Christmas season in New York. From that moment on, the city feels like a winter wonderland.
In the next sections, we’ll explore everything that happens from October to December, and help you plan your visit at the perfect time.
All-Year-Round NYC Christmas Decorations: Where Are the Best Ones?
Planning a trip to New York outside of the 2026 holiday season, but still craving some festive spirit? There are places across the city where the magic of Christmas lasts all year.
One of the most well-known is Rolf’s, a German restaurant located on 22nd Street and 3rd Avenue. Famous for its dense and colorful Christmas decor, it stays decorated year-round. While Rolf’s is worth a visit for photos and atmosphere, it’s often crowded in December and less polished out of season. Food reviews are mixed, and decorations can gather dust over time. That’s why we recommend visiting outside peak season, for a quick snack and to snap a few memorable pictures.
For a more curated holiday dining experience, Papillon Bistro is our top pick, but keep in mind that it transforms into a Christmas-themed restaurant only during the holiday season, once it’s fully decorated on November 20. That’s also when we launch our My Christmas Morning in Manhattan Tour with Papillon Christmas Restaurant, which ends with skip-the-line access and a guaranteed reserved table under its glowing lights and festive decor.
If you’re shopping for ornaments or holiday gifts any time of year, don’t miss the Christmas Cottage in Times Square. Located near the red steps, this shop brings the spirit of New York Christmas to every season.
And for something truly special, head to the Christmas in New York shop in Little Italy, Manhattan. It’s a magical, all-year-round destination for holiday shopping and one of our favorite off-season stops in the city.
No matter when you visit, you can always find a bit of New York Christmas magic.
Christmas in New York 2026: Holiday Season Activities in October
When does New York decorate for Christmas in 2026? Surprisingly, some festive activities begin before Halloween. While full decorations appear in November, several key holiday attractions start as early as October.
The season kicks off with the Rockefeller Center Ice Skating Rink, which opens on Saturday, October 10, 2026. Even without the tree, skating in this iconic spot across from Saks Fifth Avenue already feels magical.
On Friday, October 23, the Bryant Park Winter Village opens to the public. This popular Midtown market offers dozens of holiday-themed shops, seasonal treats, and one of the most picturesque ice rinks in New York City. Access to the rink is free, you only pay for skate rentals. The market runs through January 3, and the rink itself usually stays open a bit longer, through February 28.
Just two days later, on Sunday, October 25, Wollman Rink in Central Park opens for the winter season. Nestled among trees with skyline views, it’s a beautiful way to enjoy early holiday vibes. It stays open all the way through Sunday, March 21.
On Monday, October 26, the Rockefeller Christmas Tree is officially announced. This is the moment the tree’s journey to Rockefeller Plaza truly begins, even though it won’t be cut and delivered for a couple more weeks.
While New York isn’t fully decorated yet in October, these attractions mark the quiet beginning of the Christmas season. If you’re visiting early, you’ll already find lights, markets, and ice skating, perfect for getting into the festive mood before the crowds arrive.
Christmas in New York 2026: Holiday Season Activities in November
November is the month when the holiday spirit truly takes over New York City. While many believe December is the most festive, the real magic starts weeks earlier. If you’re planning a New York Christmas trip, this is the time to go.
Early November: The Rockefeller Tree's Journey Begins
The Rockefeller Center Chalets open on November 1, giving visitors a head start on holiday shopping right beside the plaza. They stay open through January 3.
The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall with the Rockettes begins on November 4 and runs through January 4, a much longer window than in past years.
On November 5, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is cut down in its hometown, officially starting its journey to the city. It arrives in New York in the early morning of November 7, with the arrival ceremony and hoisting running from 7 AM to 11 AM. Watching it lifted into place is one of our favorite early-season tips.
Mid-November: Markets, Windows, and Rooftop Bars
From November 13 through December 24, the Union Square Christmas Market fills the square with handcrafted gifts, festive food, and seasonal drinks.
The 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar gets fully decorated on November 14, complete with heated igloos for guests, and is the featured final stop on our Holiday Spirit in Manhattan Tour with 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar.Â
Two days later, on November 16, Classic Harbor Line’s Christmas cruises begin sailing for a festive view of the skyline from the water.
Shine Bright at Hudson Yards turns on its lights on November 17 and runs through January 7, filling the plaza with glowing trees and illuminated arcades.
The Plaza celebrates its own Christmas tree lighting the same day.
Bloomingdale’s unveils its holiday windows on November 18, and both Macy’s famous Christmas windows at Herald Square and Bergdorf Goodman’s windows unveil on November 19.
November 20: Fifth Avenue Lights Up
Fifth and Sixth Avenue’s decorations go up on November 20, and the Fox Square Christmas Tree lights up with over 300,000 lights, adding a bright photo stop to your holiday strolls. Papillon Bistro finishes its holiday transformation the same day, and that’s when we launch our My Christmas Morning in Manhattan Tour with Papillon Christmas Restaurant.
Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show: What We Know for 2026
As for Saks Fifth Avenue, the Holiday Light Show has had a rocky few years. In 2024, the show didn’t run at all. In 2025, it made a spectacular comeback with a reimagined display. For 2026, we’re back to not knowing. Saks Global filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2026 and only emerged from it in June, so the show’s return isn’t guaranteed and hasn’t been confirmed yet. We’ll update this section and our Instagram, @MyChristmasInNewYorkCity, the moment Saks makes an announcement.
Thanksgiving Week: The Season Officially Begins
On November 25, the Thanksgiving Parade Balloon Inflation takes place outside the American Museum of Natural History, running from midday to early evening. Arrive by 11 AM at the latest to avoid long lines.
This is also when our Thanksgiving Day Parade Travel Package begins.
Then, on November 26, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade officially launches the Christmas season, traveling from the Upper West Side to Herald Square. For a good view along the route, arrive by 5:30 AM.
The next day, November 27, brings a trio of season openers. Macy’s Santaland opens at Herald Square, and both our Holiday Spirit in Manhattan Tour with 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar and our Dyker Heights Christmas Lights Tour with DUMBO and Free Hot Chocolate at Bryant Park Winter Village begin for the season.
November in New York delivers the magic you’ve seen in holiday movies, live, glowing, and unforgettable.
Christmas in New York 2026: Holiday Season Activities in December
December in New York City is all about lights, trees, and unforgettable atmosphere. While most decorations are already up by late November, December brings the final wave of magic with the city’s most iconic Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies. The Most Iconic Tree Lighting Ceremonies in New York
After exploring the key events of the 2026 holiday season in NYC, it’s time to highlight the most iconic Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies in the city. These events bring magic, lights, and a true sense of celebration to neighborhoods across Manhattan.
Three tree lightings share December 1 this year. The Bryant Park Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony brings a professional ice skating show and a festive atmosphere to the heart of Midtown, without the heavy Rockefeller crowds. The Lotte New York Palace lights its tree in a more intimate, luxury-hotel setting on the same day. Down at the water, the South Street Seaport Tree Lighting adds festive charm to the historic Financial District waterfront.
The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony follows on December 2, with the lights switching on at 10 PM. This is the most famous holiday event in New York City, attracting thousands of visitors. The tree is decorated with tens of thousands of lights and topped with a Swarovski crystal star. It’s a must-see moment that truly defines Christmas in New York.
On December 3, the Wall Street Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place in the Financial District, offering a more intimate and local vibe. It’s also one of the featured stops on our Holiday Spirit in Manhattan Tour with 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar, giving you the chance to enjoy it with a guided experience and festive extras.
Rounding out the month, the Washington Square Park Christmas Tree Lighting takes place on December 10, bringing holiday cheer to the historic arch and Greenwich Village.
These ceremonies are highlights of the season and a wonderful way to see New York at its most magical.
