The first festive attractions appear in October, but New York really starts to feel like Christmas from mid-November. By around November 20, most major Fifth and Sixth Avenue decorations are ready. After Thanksgiving on November 26, the Christmas season is in full swing.
If Christmas decorations are the main reason for your trip, we recommend visiting from November 20 onwards.

Is New York Decorated for Christmas Before Thanksgiving?
Yes. In fact, by the week before Thanksgiving, Midtown already looks and feels very Christmassy.
From mid-November, the change happens quickly. Holiday windows appear, hotels dress their lobbies for the season and the big displays along Fifth and Sixth Avenue start taking over Midtown.
By around November 20, we consider New York ready for an early Christmas trip. Walk around Radio City, Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue and you will already see plenty of the decorations people travel to New York for.
We really like this window for visitors who want the Christmas atmosphere without the biggest December crowds. A few later displays and tree lightings will still be missing, but it no longer feels too early.
Do You Need to Wait Until December for Christmas in New York?
No. December is not when Christmas starts in New York.
By late November, Christmas markets, holiday windows, decorated hotels and restaurants, and many of Manhattan’s best-known displays are already in place.
The first week of December brings the next big moment, when many of New York’s major Christmas tree lighting ceremonies take place. That adds another layer to the season, but you do not need to wait for it to enjoy Christmas in the city.
We would not hesitate to book a Christmas trip for late November.
What Is the Best Time to Visit New York for Christmas in 2026?
For most visitors, we recommend November 20 onwards.
