When does Christmas start in New York in 2026? The city starts to feel properly festive from mid-November. By around November 20, most major Fifth and Sixth Avenue decorations are in place. After Thanksgiving on November 26, the Christmas season is in full swing.

The first seasonal attractions appear earlier, starting in October. But if Christmas decorations are the main reason for your trip, we recommend visiting from November 20 onwards.

Christmas in New York builds through November rather than starting on one single day. By around November 20, most major Fifth and Sixth Avenue decorations are ready. After Thanksgiving, the season is in full swing.

    The first seasonal attractions appear. Ice skating and winter attractions begin opening, but New York is not fully decorated yet.

  2. The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes begins its 2026 season.

    For us, this is when New York is ready for an early Christmas trip. Most major Fifth and Sixth Avenue decorations are in place.

  5. Thanksgiving is the big turning point. From here, New York feels fully immersed in the Christmas season.

  6. The fullest part of the Christmas season begins, with more seasonal experiences running across the city.

  7. The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting adds one of the season's biggest Christmas moments.

  8. First week of December

    The major Christmas tree-lighting period brings the final layer to New York's holiday season.

Is New York Decorated for Christmas Before Thanksgiving?

Yes. New York is already decorated for Christmas before Thanksgiving, especially around Midtown Manhattan.

From mid-November, the change happens quickly. Holiday markets open, department store windows appear, hotels decorate their lobbies and the large displays along Fifth and Sixth Avenue start transforming Midtown.

By around November 20, we consider New York ready for an early Christmas trip. Walk around Radio City, Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue and you will already see many of the decorations people travel to New York for.

We especially like the period from November 20 to Thanksgiving. You get plenty of Christmas atmosphere, while crowds are generally easier than during the busiest December weeks.

A few later displays and major Christmas tree lightings are still to come, but it no longer feels too early.

Is Late November a Good Time to Visit New York for Christmas?

Yes. Late November is one of the best times to visit New York for Christmas.

By then, most major Midtown decorations, holiday markets, store windows, decorated hotels and seasonal attractions are already in place.

You also do not need to wait until December. The first week of December brings many of the major Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, but the city already feels festive before then.

If you visit between November 20 and Thanksgiving, you get an earlier version of the season with slightly lighter crowds.

From November 27 onwards, New York moves into its fullest Christmas period. More seasonal experiences are running, and the city feels completely immersed in Christmas.

We would not hesitate to book a Christmas trip for late November.

What Is the Best Time to Visit New York for Christmas in 2026?

For most visitors, we recommend November 20 onwards. The best dates depend on whether you prefer slightly lighter crowds or want as much of the Christmas season as possible.

November 20 to 25

This is our favorite window for an earlier Christmas trip.

Most major Fifth and Sixth Avenue decorations are already in place, along with holiday markets, seasonal attractions and many hotel and store displays.

You still miss some of the major tree lightings, but you gain a more relaxed version of Christmas in Midtown.

From November 27

The day after Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the fullest part of the season.

By this point, Christmas attractions, decorations and seasonal experiences are running across the city. This is the better choice if seeing as much as possible matters more than avoiding crowds.

First week of December

Choose the first week of December if the major Christmas tree lightings are an important part of your trip.

This period adds the final layer to New York’s Christmas season, but it is also one of the busiest times around Midtown.
