When Is the Rockefeller Tree Lighting in 2026?
The Rockefeller Tree Lighting in 2026 takes place on Wednesday, December 2. The ceremony starts around 8 pm, with live performances leading up to the 9:57 pm countdown and the moment the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lights up just before 10 pm.
If you want to watch the Tree Lighting in person, however, knowing the ceremony time is only part of the plan. This is one of New York City’s busiest Christmas events. We recommend arriving around 10 am if you want a good public viewing position.

Where is the Rockefeller Tree Lighting?
The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree stands at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10112, between West 49th and West 50th Streets in Midtown Manhattan.
Where should you stand?
Police and event security control the public viewing areas, so your final position depends on where space is still available. If you have a choice, we prefer the left side of the tree near Anthropologie. You are less likely to have the main press area directly in front of you, which can give you a cleaner view of the tree.
Is the Rockefeller Tree Lighting free?
Yes. Public viewing is free. If the Tree Lighting is the reason for your trip, see our Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting Travel Package for a more planned way to experience lighting night.
What Time Is the Rockefeller Tree Lighting in 2026?
The Rockefeller Tree Lighting ceremony starts around 8 pm on Wednesday, December 2, 2026.
Live performances continue throughout the evening before the final countdown begins at 9:57 pm. The famous 10-second countdown leads into the moment the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lights up just before 10 pm.
Public viewing around Rockefeller Center is free, but there are no reserved public viewing spots. Arriving shortly before the ceremony will not give you the same experience as attending an event with an assigned seat.
Lighting night becomes extremely busy, and many visitors spend most of the day around Rockefeller Center before the ceremony begins.
If the Tree Lighting is the main reason for your New York trip, our Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting Travel Package offers a more planned way to experience the evening. The package includes our Tree Lighting Gala experience with indoor and outdoor viewing, rather than spending the entire day holding a public viewing position.
How Early Should You Arrive for the Rockefeller Tree Lighting?
We recommend arriving around 10 am if you want a good public viewing spot for the Rockefeller Tree Lighting. We consider 12 pm the latest sensible arrival time.
That sounds extremely early for an evening ceremony, but crowds build throughout the day. Street closures also begin around Rockefeller Center, making access increasingly difficult as the afternoon progresses.
Once you find a good position, be prepared to stay there. If you leave during the day, you should not assume you will be able to return to the same spot.
There is a much easier option if your main goal is simply to experience the Rockefeller Christmas Tree switching on.
After Tree Lighting night, the tree lights turn on every morning at 5 am during the Christmas season. Come early and you can watch Rockefeller Plaza go from dark to illuminated without the huge ceremony crowds.
You will not get the performances or official countdown. What you do get is a much quieter Rockefeller Center and a far easier opportunity to enjoy and photograph the tree. For many visitors, we actually prefer this experience.
If you are attending on December 2, read our complete Rockefeller Tree Lighting guide for viewing areas, crowds and what to expect on lighting day.
