Where to Watch Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2026
Where to watch Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2026 depends on what you want from the morning, but our favorite public viewing area is Sixth Avenue near Radio City Music Hall. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the Radio City sign and Christmas tree create one of our favorite backdrops for the giant balloons.
Central Park West is better if you want to see the parade earlier. Sixth Avenue around West 38th Street is another option we like. In past years, we have sometimes found this stretch less packed than the blocks around Radio City.
The 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade takes place on Thursday, November 26, 2026. For a good public viewing position, we recommend arriving around 5:00 a.m. Arrive earlier if being directly against the barricade really matters to you.

Best Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Viewing Spots at a Glance
Our quick comparison of the viewing areas we would consider for Thanksgiving morning in New York.
-
1Best for photos & atmosphere
Sixth Avenue near Radio City Music Hall
Our favorite overall. The parade atmosphere is fantastic here, and the Radio City sign and Christmas decorations create one of our favorite backdrops for the giant balloons.
-
2Best for an earlier view
Central Park West
Choose Central Park West if seeing the parade earlier matters more than the Midtown backdrop. You can also finish your parade morning sooner.
-
3Good Midtown alternative
Sixth Avenue around West 38th Street
We have sometimes found this stretch less packed than the Radio City blocks. It can be a smart choice if the classic Radio City photograph matters less to you.
-
4Best with reserved access
Columbus Circle
The balloon turn is spectacular, but normal street viewing can be complicated. Reserved or elevated access makes this a very different experience.
This is where guests experience the parade during our Thanksgiving Day Parade Travel Package .
-
5Not our public viewing pick
Macy’s Herald Square
The parade finishes here, but television production and invited viewing make this a poor place to base a normal street-viewing plan.
Where Is the Best Place to Watch Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2026?
There is no single best viewing spot for everyone. Your choice depends on whether you value atmosphere, an earlier view, photographs or a slightly calmer section of the route.
1. Sixth Avenue near Radio City Music Hall
This is our favorite overall place to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
By the time the procession reaches Midtown, Thanksgiving morning is in full swing. The giant balloons moving between the buildings feel particularly impressive here.
For us, the biggest advantage is photography. The Radio City Music Hall sign and Christmas decorations create a very New York backdrop behind the balloons.
The trade-off is the crowd. This is a popular section, so we would arrive early and choose our position before the sidewalks become packed.
2. Central Park West
Choose Central Park West if seeing the parade earlier matters more than having the Midtown backdrop.
The procession reaches this part of the route before Sixth Avenue. That means you can see the balloons and floats earlier and finish your parade morning sooner.
This can work particularly well for families or anyone with Thanksgiving lunch plans later in the day.
The best positions fill extremely early, so this is not the place to plan a relaxed arrival.
3. Sixth Avenue around West 38th Street
We think this part of Sixth Avenue deserves more attention.
It does not give you the same Radio City backdrop, but we have sometimes found it less packed than the blocks farther north.
That does not mean you can arrive late. We would still aim for around 5:00 a.m. if you want a good position.
If your priority is seeing the parade rather than capturing the classic Radio City photograph, this can be a smart alternative.
4. Columbus Circle
Columbus Circle looks spectacular on the parade route because the balloons make their major turn here.
For normal street viewing, however, it would not be our first choice. Crowds, access and sightlines can make the area more complicated than it appears on a map.
The experience changes completely when you have reserved or elevated access.
Guests on our Thanksgiving Day Parade Travel Package spend Thanksgiving morning at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The experience includes a reserved table in The Atrium, access to the Appel Room viewing area and the ability to step outside to see the parade before returning indoors.
What Time Should You Arrive for the Macy’s Parade?
For a realistic chance of finding a good public viewing position, we recommend arriving around 5:00 a.m.
If you want to be directly against the barricade, arrive earlier.
For the 100th parade in 2026, we would personally aim for around 5:00 a.m. near Radio City and on the most popular Central Park West blocks. We would rather be early and settled than arrive after the best positions have already gone.
Do not arrive later simply because the parade reaches Midtown after it leaves the Upper West Side. Spectators claim their positions long before the balloons arrive.
Once you find a good spot, stay there. Barricades, street closures and dense crowds make changing blocks much harder than it looks on a map.
Where Should You Avoid Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?
Macy’s Herald Square would not be our choice for normal public viewing.
It may look like the obvious place because this is where the parade finishes and where you see many performances on television. In reality, television production and invited viewing dominate this part of the route.
Macy’s grandstand seats are not sold to the general public, so do not plan your morning around trying to reach the televised seating area.
We would also avoid choosing Columbus Circle purely because the balloons make their turn there. Without reserved or elevated viewing, other sections of the route are easier.
Finally, do not try to follow the parade through Manhattan. Street closures, barricades and crowd controls make moving alongside the procession unrealistic.
How Does the Parade Route Affect Where You Watch?
The parade travels roughly 2.5 miles through Manhattan before finishing at Macy’s Herald Square.
The main difference for spectators is timing. Central Park West sees the procession first. Sixth Avenue sees it later as the parade travels through Midtown.
That is why we prefer Central Park West for an earlier finish and Radio City for atmosphere and photographs.
For the complete route, parade time, Balloon Inflation information and other 2026 details, continue with our Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2026 guide.
Before Thanksgiving morning, also check the official Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade information for final public-viewing and access instructions.
If we had to choose one public spot, we would still pick Sixth Avenue near Radio City Music Hall. Choose Central Park West when timing matters more, or West 38th Street when you prefer an alternative to the busiest Midtown blocks.
