Christmas in New York 2026: Holiday Season Activities in November
November is when the holiday spirit truly takes over New York City. While many visitors associate December with Christmas, most of the city’s transformation happens during November.
Early November: The Rockefeller Tree's Journey Begins
The Rockefeller Center Après Skate Chalets open on November 1. They remain beside the rink through January 3.
The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes begins on November 4 and continues through January 4.
On November 5, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is cut in its hometown. The tree arrives in New York early on November 7. The arrival ceremony and hoisting take place from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Watching the tree rise above Rockefeller Plaza is one of our favourite early-season experiences. Arrive before 7:00 a.m. for the best chance of seeing the main action. The tree will not be lit yet. Workers spend the following weeks adding thousands of lights and the Swarovski star.
Mid-November: Markets, Windows, and Rooftop Bars
From November 12 through December 24, the Union Square Holiday Market fills the square with handcrafted gifts, festive food, and seasonal drinks.
The 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar gets fully decorated on November 14, complete with heated igloos for guests.
Two days later, on November 16, Classic Harbor Line’s Christmas cruises begin sailing for a festive view of the skyline from the water.
Shine Bright at Hudson Yards turns on its lights on November 17 and runs through January 7, filling the plaza with glowing trees and illuminated arcades. The Plaza celebrates its Christmas Tree Lighting on the same day. The celebration is reserved for overnight guests and visitors with confirmed dining reservations.
Bloomingdale’s unveils its holiday windows on November 18, and both Macy’s famous Christmas windows at Herald Square and Bergdorf Goodman’s windows unveil on November 19.
November 20: Fifth Avenue Lights Up
Fifth and Sixth Avenue’s decorations go up on November 20, and the Fox Square Christmas Tree lights up with over 300,000 lights, adding a bright photo stop to your holiday strolls. Papillon Bistro finishes its holiday transformation the same day, and that’s when we launch our My Christmas Morning in Manhattan Tour with Papillon Christmas Restaurant.
Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show: What We Know for 2026
As for Saks Fifth Avenue, the Holiday Light Show has had a rocky few years. In 2024, the show didn’t run at all. In 2025, it made a spectacular comeback with a reimagined display. For 2026, we’re back to not knowing. Saks Global filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2026 and only emerged from it in June, so the show’s return isn’t guaranteed and hasn’t been confirmed yet. We’ll update this section and our Instagram, @MyChristmasInNewYorkCity, the moment Saks makes an announcement.
Thanksgiving Week: The Season Officially Begins
On November 25, the Thanksgiving Parade Balloon Inflation takes place outside the American Museum of Natural History, running from midday to early evening. Arrive by 11 AM at the latest to avoid long lines.
This is also when our Thanksgiving Day Parade Travel Package begins.
Then, on November 26, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade officially launches the Christmas season, traveling from the Upper West Side to Herald Square. For a good view along the route, arrive by 5:30 AM.
The next day, November 27, brings a trio of season openers. Macy’s Santaland opens at Herald Square, and both our Holiday Spirit in Manhattan Tour with 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar and our Dyker Heights Christmas Lights Tour with DUMBO and Free Hot Chocolate at Bryant Park Winter Village begin for the season.
November in New York delivers the magic you’ve seen in holiday movies, live, glowing, and unforgettable.
Christmas in New York 2026: Holiday Season Activities in December
December in New York City is filled with lights, decorated trees and an unforgettable holiday atmosphere.
Most Christmas decorations are already in place by late November.
December brings the final wave of major Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies.
Our Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting Travel Package begins on December 1, during the city’s busiest tree lighting week.
December is also one of the busiest periods in New York. Book restaurants, shows and paid attractions before travelling. Allow extra time when walking around Midtown. Pavements become crowded, especially during evenings and weekends. Early mornings are best for photographs. Evenings offer the fullest atmosphere, but they also bring the largest crowds.

This is the most famous holiday event in New York City, attracting thousands of visitors. The tree is decorated with tens of thousands of lights and topped with a Swarovski crystal star. It’s a must-see moment that truly defines Christmas in New York.
On December 3, the Wall Street Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place in the Financial District, offering a more intimate and local vibe.
